Dear Elizabeth, Theatreworks 2026-2027 Season

Written by Sarah Ruhl
Director: Max Shulman

Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell left behind masterful collections of award-winning poetry, and yet, their most stirring writing lives on in the 30 years of letters they faithfully exchanged. Featuring dialogue crafted from these letters, and brimming with theatrical magic, Dear Elizabeth brings the story of their relationship to the stage. The quiet, fierce friendship forged in their correspondence teeters precariously on the cusp of romance, and paints a stunningly intimate portrait of two genius minds, linked by what could’ve been. Coursing with humor and marked by the whimsy and wit of America’s best poets, the dramatization of Lowell and Bishop’s letters offers a poignant reminder that love lives in the in-betweens: carried in letters, tucked into songs, hidden in the folds of our laundry, in the sand between our toes, and, occasionally, in the care of a toucan.
