Theatreworks Presents a Vibrant New Take on Austen’s Sense & Sensibility

Helmed by Caitlin Lowans in Their Final Directorial Work at Theatreworks, This Adaptation Brings Fresh Energy to Austen’s Wit, Romance, and Timeless Drama.

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — Theatreworks Colorado Springs is excited to announce its upcoming production of Sense & Sensibility, running from Friday, November 29 through Sunday, December 22, 2024, in the Dusty Loo Bon Vivant Theater at the Ent Center for the Arts at UCCS. This family-friendly adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel, helmed by Caitlin Lowans in their final directorial work for Theatreworks, promises an evening of humor, romance, and the inimitable social commentary that Austen fans have come to love.

"Though celebrated for her keen and humorous portrayal of romance, Jane Austen’s greatest love was for her sister, Cassandra. For me, this story not only foresees the impact of living under the constant scrutiny of social pressures and gossip, but also centers on the profound bond between the sisters, Elinor and Marianne—the 'sense' and 'sensibility' of the title. Their belief in their differences initially pulls them apart, yet through the trials of English high society, they come to realize their deep need for and love for each other," said Lowans of their approach to the production.

As announced last month, Caitlin Lowans will leave Theatreworks in February 2025 to assume the prestigious role of Artistic Director at Ten Thousand Things Theater in Minneapolis. This production of Sense & Sensibility marks the last opportunity for Colorado Springs audiences to experience Lowans’ directorial vision at Theatreworks, where they have been an innovative and transformative leader for over six years.

Pheobe H. Boynton, costume designer for the production, spoke about the Regency-era style costumes and incorporating new color palettes as a storytelling device: "It was wonderful to dive into traditional dressmaking while playing with the story’s whimsy. We use bold, saturated colors to bring joy and highlight character transformations on stage. While traditional Regency costumes are often white, pastel, or Indian cotton prints, we modernized with teals, greens, and blues for a romantic touch. Inspired to a degree by Bridgerton’s use of color, we shifted from period accuracy to storytelling. Each costume is based on original research and historical garments, but the overall design tells a story rather than recreating the past."
