Written by William Shakespeare and Directed by Max Shulman

1940s Verona is crumbling; Italy grapples with the carnage that will define an era, and Shakespeare’s greatest love story unfolds amongst the wreckage. In this bold new setting, Romeo and Juliet find a glimmer of hope - a promise of life – in each other. As the dominoes fall, and desperation grows, they dare to forge a future beyond their broken world. But Verona rages with vengeance and violence, and to resist the storm, they must risk it all.

In his first production as Theatreworks’ Artistic Director, Max Shulman (An Iliad, Free-for-All: Pericles, Henry IV & V) offers a searing new vision of the dazzling poetry and violence that first drew Theatreworks’ to Romeo & Juliet in 1976. Featuring a stellar cast of Colorado’s finest, it brings the ferocity and heartbreak of Shakespeare’s tragedy to life.

UCCS students are always free. Contact the box office in person or by phone with your student ID to reserve seats.

This production contains violence, suicide, and themes of intergenerational trauma. As each audience member is different, we don't make age recommendations, but if you have questions about the material or wish to read a copy of the work in advance, please email theatreworks@uccs.edu.
